Socialization is a word that means the adoption of the behavior of the surrounding culture. As members of our families, it is important for our pets to feel comfortable and enjoy living with us and doing the things we do. We’ve written a lot about socializing puppies, but you may not realize that kittens and cats need socialization too. If you’ve seen shy or scared stray neighborhood cats, you have seen the result of a lack of socialization to humans. Socialization is best accomplished through exposure while your kitten is young.

Socialization is a very important learning process through which puppies become accustomed to being around different types of people, animals, objects and environments. Puppies have a short window between 3-16 weeks of age when they are learning how to be a part of society and form opinions on what is scary and what is safe. In the wild, these opinions can be a key to survival.

Join us on Saturday, May 16th at 4pm for a free informational session about Tellington TTouch. Jenny White of Dog-Ed will introduce you to the methods of this unique approach to training, which is based on respect and compassion for our animal friends.

Last November, several of our employees and their dogs had the chance to take part in a 2-day TTouch workshop, taught by Kathy Cascade, a Certified Tellington TTouch Instructor. Participants could sign up either with their dog as dog/handler team or as auditors without dog. Congratulations to the newest graduates of Dog-Ed's Tricks and Games Class: Molly, Zoe, Frankie and Marcie. The past several Saturdays were filled with laughter, treats, tricks and fun. Tricks? Why would you want to teach your dog to “bow” or “back up”? There are so many reasons! Teaching your dog tricks will increase your dog’s mental stimulation, sharpen your training skills, strengthen your relationship and communication skills with each other, and gives your dog something fun to do instead of the unwanted behavior.
