Do you believe in love at first sight? Barbara and Buddy do!
Barbara’s beloved canine companion, Pookie, recently passed away. At first she was not ready to bring another pet into her family; she was just too sad. Upon hearing in the news about the 55 Shih Tzus, Poodles and Shih Tzu/Poodle mixes that the Asheville Humane Society rescued in North Asheville, Barbara decided to visit these dogs who so badly needed a loving family to call their own. She had just started to think about bringing another dog into her life and was considering a smaller one.
Barbara and her son went to Asheville Humane Society to meet the Shih-poos. Then it happened: Love at first sight! Buddy was sitting quietly in a room off the main lobby. He caught their attention because most of the Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu mixes were white and Buddy was mostly brown. He looked a like a perfect teddy bear. Barbara instantly knew she wanted to make him a part of their family.
When they first met, Buddy was scared and sad. He had been through a lot. Buddy was one of the 55 Shih-Poos that the Asheville Humane Society (AHS) rescued from very bad conditions in North Asheville. These dogs were frightened, under-socialized, and many were in terrible condition to the point of having feces-matted fur and urine burns all over their bodies. Several of the dogs were in need of critical medical care. After receiving TLC, medical care, grooming, and socialization from Asheville Humane Society, Buddy was ready to find a family to love him and care for him.

Buddy immediately knew Barbara was his family. When they first arrived home, he investigated the house, jumped up on Barbara’s lap and settled right in. He was home! Every day Buddy is learning things that he never had a chance to before. Before his life with Barbara, he had to totally concentrate on surviving. He is learning to eat healthy meals and to wait politely for his food. They are working on housetraining and making progress. He used to hate being picked up because it scared him, and now he is asking to be picked up. With Barbara’s love and patience, Buddy has changed so much. Even looking at the photos you can see the difference!
Buddy is now a happy pup! He loves to snuggle with his new family. He loves toys, which is extra special to Barbara. Pookie loved toys too, and after she passed, her toys were put in a bag in a downstairs room. One day Buddy discovered them. His mission was to bring one toy upstairs at a time. Some of his favorite toys are his bunny rabbit, skunk and squirrel.
Barbara brought Buddy in to see Dr. Wootten for a physical exam and got a great report. He is a healthy boy with good teeth. Happy, Healthy and Loved - what more could anyone ask for? Congratulations to Buddy and Barbara for finding each other!
