Our Patient Care Team is Second to None!

registered vet tech AshevilleLast month we celebrated National Veterinary Technician Week and honored our Patient Care Team members for their dedication to our patients and their families. Their compassion and integrity is second to none!

Animal Hospital of North Asheville is so lucky to have twenty-four gentle, kind and conscientious people on our Patient Care Team.  We honor and greatly appreciate each and every one of them!  We thank them for their tireless efforts to provide the very best medical and surgical care.  We also thank them for the constant acts of kindness to relieve stress and worry in our patients and for always doing whatever will make our patients more comfortable. They are an amazing team!

registered vet tech AshevilleAmong the 24 people on the Patient Care Team are 12 Registered Veterinary Technicians, which is quite a large number of RVTs for a hospital our size. RVTs are very special people in that they have attended at least a two year accredited fulltime veterinary technician program. There is an excellent program at AB tech that many of our Registered Veterinary Technicians attended, but you can see on their bios on our website that our technicians have attended programs at different colleges around the US and several also have BS or BA degrees. They are valuable to our hospital because through their training in many areas such as pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, and clinical pathology, they are not just following the doctor’s orders but understand the decisions that our veterinarians make and are able to apply their own knowledge. They come out of school with skills and experience in many areas such as venipuncture, nursing care, surgical prep and assisting, anesthesia, radiology and bandaging. Unfortunately the pay level for veterinary technicians is far below that for other two year degrees (just as the pay for veterinarians is less than that of MDs), so there is only one reason that they chose this field - they love animals! They dedicate their lives to providing high quality care in a very gentle and compassionate manner.  They love the pets and find reward in knowing that our patients are getting the best care.  Upon graduation, they take the following oath which our veterinary technicians live by:

registered vet tech Asheville"I solemnly dedicate myself to aiding animals and society by providing excellent care and services for animals, by alleviating animal suffering, and promoting public health. I accept my obligations to practice my profession conscientiously and with sensitivity, adhering to the profession's Code of Ethics, and furthering my knowledge and competence through a commitment to lifelong learning.”

Our Registered Veterinary Technicians not only have to graduate from a two year program, they then must pass the National Veterinary Technician exam and the NC Veterinary Technician Exam. To maintain their registration, they must attend continuing education classes. In October alone, five of our veterinary technicians took off-site continuing education classes and seminars in order to learn the latest information on the best care for your pets.

Emily and Jodi attended the Annual Veterinary Dental Forum Oct 3- 6th in New Orleans. They spent time learning about pain management, nerve blocks, periodontal cleanings, management of dental emergencies, oral anatomy and charting, creating an oral home care regimen, dental radiology, anesthesia monitoring and more.
