What is Fear Free?

When it’s time to visit veterinarian, does your cat or dog get excited? Do they wag their tail or run to their carrier? Or does your anxiety rise because your pet gets stressed at the visit?

At the Animal Hospital of North Asheville, we have been working for years to help decrease the stress level for our patients. Now we have joined with the Fear Free Initiative founded by veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker to continue to reduce the fear, anxiety and stress (FAS) so many pets and their families experience while at the veterinarian.

The Fear Free training and certification program was developed by board-certified veterinary behaviorists, veterinary technician behavior specialists, board-certified veterinary anesthetists, well-known veterinary practice management experts, and boarded veterinary practitioners experienced in Fear Free methods.

The Fear Free initiative aims to “take the ‘pet’ out of ‘petrified’” and help our patients experience less fear, anxiety, and stress during their veterinary visits by promoting considerate approach and gentle handling techniques used in calming environments. Utilization of Fear Free methods and protocols leads to reduction or removal of anxiety triggers, which creates an experience that is safer and more rewarding for all involved including pets, their families, and veterinary healthcare teams.  As a veterinary practice, we have embodied the philosophies of Fear Free and strive to make each visit a happy and stress-free visit from the living room to the exam room, and back home again.

All of our 8 veterinarians have completed their Fear Free Professional Certifications, as well as the majority of our support staff. To become certified, our veterinarians and veterinary staff have completed a comprehensive, 8-part educational course and exam. Moving forward, they’ll participate in continuing education to remain certified.

Specialized Fear Free Certification helps create health protocols and a veterinary environment that your dog, cat, puppy, or kitten will benefit from and you can rest easy knowing that your pet is receiving the best care available in WNC.
