AHNA may need to start sending out newsletters addressed to the pets. We just found out that one of our patients can actually read! It is truly amazing!
This video shows her reading while here at AHNA for a visit. Misha is an adorable Goldendoodle who is loved by and lives with Kay Loveland, and is a special dog in many ways. She works alongside Kay who is a Clinical Psychologist working with human patients who are dealing with various issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, and attachment and intimacy issues. Misha and Kay are also a Therapy Dog Team with Paws on a Mission and they routinely visit the Oncology Unit at Mission Hospital as well as the Children’s and Adolescent’s Psychiatric Units. Kay is also the director of Camp Unleashed Asheville which is held at Camp Tekoa each fall. It is an awesome four day, overnight camp for dogs and their people full of fun activities such as hiking, swimming, dock diving and agility, as well as input from various dog behaviorists and specialists. It was at Camp Unleashed that Kay first learned how to teach Misha to read, and quite surprisingly, Misha picked it up very quickly and can now read about 30 words. Seeing is believing, so watch as Kay writes down words on a piece of paper in an AHNA exam room and Misha does exactly as the words instruct!
